Volvo continues showing its next new model by chapters. We are talking about the new Volvo XC90, a large SUV, seven – seater, which will is also a plug -in hybrid version of 400 hp. The plan is to present completely in August, and to hit the market before the end of the year. It could quite resemble the prototype Volvo XC Concept.

Volvo XC90: Instead of ‘Plug-in Hybrid’ call me ‘Twin Engine’

While we are talking about a car plug -in hybrid as such, Volvo seems to leave the nomenclature plug-in hybrid that came using in the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid(diesel), or the Volvo S60L Plug-in Hybrid (gasoline) (in first only for China), and adopts this new nomenclature Twin Engine.

The Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine will have a combined total power of 400 hp and 640 Nm of torque, but with a combined consumption of only 2.6 l / 100 km fuel, and CO₂ emissions of 60 g / km in homologation cycle NEDC. In pure electric mode approved will have a range of about 40 km.

It combines a Drive-E engine gasoline four – cylinder, two – liter supercharged and turbocharged, who goes ahead and turns the front wheels with an electric motor of 60 kW, almost 82 hp, which goes back and makes turn the rear wheels.

Overall, the car is driving all four wheels, but this may change depending on the circumstances: for example in pure electric mode function as a rear wheel drive vehicle.

Overfeeding covers low engine speeds the engine to avoid turbo lag. A box is equipped with automatic transmission, but has not yet said how many speeds; it may be eight, like the S60L Plug-in Hybrid. The lithium-ion battery it is placed in the center tunnel, the fuel tank is under the rear seats. The charging socket is a connector type 2 Mennekes.

As in the other plug-in hybrid models of the Swedish brand in the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine will be three driving modes:

• Pure: Pure electric mode, with limited benefits to 82 hp and rear wheel drives.
• Hybrid: Hybrid mode that combines the use of two engines as needed, but always seeking maximum efficiency.
• Power: Mode in which the two motors run at the same time always, for maximum power and traction to all four wheels.
