Devon is a beautiful county with a long history and diverse landscape that is packed full of fascinating towns full of character. There are many places that deserve a mention, but here are some of the prettiest locations that should definitely make it onto your bucket list this summer:
Dittisham
Many argue that this is Devon’s most attractive village and it’s easy to see why. Sitting on the banks of the River Dart, the river views alone are stunning but it’s the changing light on the water that really draws people. The countryside is beautiful with many walks available through this unspoilt location. A ferry carries passengers to nearby Dartmouth and across to Greenway Quay for those who wish to see Agatha Christie’s former holiday home.
Dartmouth
This is one of the county’s finest towns and it has a lot to offer. It’s charming, picturesque and boasts many activities. Located on the River Dart estuary, it sits in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with access to Dartmoor National Park to boot. A visit to the bustling harbour is also recommended, for its many cafes and boats. You’ll also discover Dartmouth Castle and the museum for learning more about the town’s long and fascinating history.
Totnes
Also located in the Area of Outstanding Beauty, Totnes benefits from being surrounded by woods and rivers. The town itself is a vibrant hive of activity, with a colourful character and long history. The town dates back to AD 907 and by the 1100s had become a flourishing market town. Totnes boasts more listed buildings than any other town and a bohemian vibe that makes it a charming place to visit. Foodies will have a ball here as there are markets regularly. Visit on a coach trip this summer with Dorset Coach Hire. Dorset coach hire by Turners Coaches will get you there in comfort and style.
Woolacombe
Heading up to the north of the county, you’ll discover stunning coastlines and swathes of beaches at every turn. Woolacombe is an award-winning seaside resort that is hugely popular with surfers and families alike. It is found in the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and features a beautiful beach that spreads for 3 miles and is nestled between rolling dunes.
Brixham
Brixham is a captivating place and a bustling fishing port that’s one of the country’s busiest with the biggest working harbour. This all adds to the buzz and character of the town, which also has an exciting food, arts and crafts scene. Some of the freshest and best seafood is also available here. In terms of history, this is where William of Orange first landed and you’ll also discover a full-scale replica of the Golden Hinde, the ship belonging to Sir Francis Drake.
Ilfracombe
Popular since the Victorian era, this is a striking town with its whitewashed buildings and hills sloping down to the harbour. Sitting near the Exmoor National Park, there is a wealth of Iron age history here, such as Hillsborough Hill – an Iron Age settlement which is now a nature reserve.
