High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) Coatings

High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel, or HVOF, is a type of thermal spray coating that enhances component surface properties and increases wear and corrosion resistance. HVOF coatings are formed when a powder is sprayed in high-pressure gas. The gas contains pure oxygen and is composed of extremely high-strength molecules that have very low average porosity.

During the spraying process, the molten powder stream impacts a substrate object, generating lamellae (or “splats”). As these splats pile up, they form a durable, insulating coating. HVOF coatings are extremely strong because of the high-speed kinetic energy of the material during the process.

High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel is an environmentally-friendly, nontoxic coating. It is applied using a flame spray process and combines a powdered friction-reducing coating material with combustible fuel. HVOF coatings feature outstanding hardness and adhesion to the substrate, and they are highly resistant to corrosion and abrasion. In addition, HVOF coatings can withstand high-temperature environments, ensuring the longevity of the coatings.

High-value, high-performance HVOF coatings use extremely high volumes of gas to apply their coatings. They are generally more expensive than plasma spray application, and HVOF coatings typically require customised hard masking. A typical HVOF coating application requires as much as ten millimetres of thick film, so it is advisable to specify a high-precision coating based on the application. What are the most common applications for HVOFs? Among the various applications for HVOF coatings, turbine blades, bearings, and other components with high wear and tear are common. The next time you need a coating for a high-strength metal, consider using HVOF.

The paper/pulp industry relies heavily on HVOF coatings to protect their equipment. Chemicals used in the papermaking process can cause corrosive damage to equipment and result in expensive maintenance. HVOF coatings extend the life of pumps and reduce maintenance costs. These coatings are a great solution for heavy-duty pumps in these environments. A coating that reduces abrasion and corrosion is an added bonus for pump operators.

In addition to its ability to improve non-stress surfaces, HVOF thermal spraying is environmentally-friendly. Since the temperature of the material is low, thermal spraying does not create a difficult-to-dispose-of effluent. Moreover, it is an in-line process and doesn’t require plating baths or batching processes. These benefits make HVOF thermal spraying an eco-friendly choice for industrial and military applications.
